While classrooms sit quiet over the summer holidays, the team at Academic Facilities Services has been hard at work transforming outdoor play spaces across Devon. This week, our installation crew was on-site at Rydon Primary School in Kingsteignton, Newton Abbot - delivering a bespoke, recycled plastic trim trail. Designed to combine high-energy physical fun with sustainable design, this new facility will be a major surprise for the children when they return for the new academic term.
Why choose recycled plastic for school trim trails?
When designing outdoor play equipment for primary schools, durability, safety and environmental impact are top priorities. While traditional timber trails remain popular, recycled plastic offers game-changing advantages for schools:
100% weatherproof and rot-free: Unlike timber, recycled plastic does not absorb water, warp or rot over time. It stands up to rain, frost and summer sunshine, year after year.
Zero splinters, maximum safety: Safety is paramount in school environments. Recycled plastic features a smooth, splinter-free finish that eliminates sharp edges while maintaining strong structural integrity.
Ultra low maintenance: Forget annual sanding, staining or sealing treatments. Recycled plastic components are virtually maintenance-free, saving schools significant operational time and expense.
Eco-friendly and sustainable: By re-purposing high-density plastic waste, we prevent tons of material from reaching landfills or oceans. It allows schools like Rydon Primary to demonstrate real-world environmental responsibility to their pupils.
Supporting fitness, balance and social play
Trim trails are one of the most effective ways to encourage active, unstructured play during break times. The new bespoke installation at Rydon Primary School features stepping components, balance obstacles and physical challenges tailored to develop key fundamental movement skills:
Gross motor skills: Enhances core strength, spatial awareness, and agility.
Balance and coordination: Promotes confidence as pupils navigate elevated beams and stepping blocks.
Social interaction and teamwork: Creates an inclusive space where children can challenge each other, invent creative games and build friendships.
