AFS installs new recycled composite and rubber mulch playground at Pilton Bluecoat Academy

Our latest project took us to Pilton Bluecoat Academy in Barnstaple, where we designed and installed a new, eco-friendly playground facility.
When designing play spaces for modern schools, durability and environmental impact are top priorities. For the new play equipment at Pilton Bluecoat, we utilised premium recycled composite plastic.
Unlike traditional timber, recycled composite offers exceptional longevity with virtually zero maintenance:
Splinter-free and safe: Smooth surfaces ensure safe hands during play.
Weather and rot resistant: Built to withstand the British weather without degrading, rusting or rotting over time.
Eco-friendly: Diverts waste plastics away from landfills, teaching pupils the value of sustainability firsthand.
Enhanced safety: Vibrant rubber mulch surfacing
To complement the new play structures, we finished the area with a bright, seamless rubber mulch safety surface.
Rubber mulch provides fantastic impact absorption, keeping children safe during high-energy play. Its natural, textured appearance integrates beautifully with outdoor surroundings while offering year-round usability - preventing muddy patches, standing water and slippery conditions even during the wetter months.
From initial concept and safety planning to full installation and ongoing maintenance, we are dedicated to delivering high-performance educational and recreational spaces. Whether your school, local council or community space needs a full playground overhaul, safety surface maintenance or equipment inspection, our team is here to help.
